Albany Skin Clinic

Skin Surgery

Albany Skin Clinic provides a range of minor skin surgical procedures, performed by GPs with additional training and experience in skin cancer medicine and skin surgery.

Skin surgery may be recommended following a skin check or consultation if a lesion requires removal, biopsy or further investigation. Your doctor will discuss the recommended procedure with you, including what is involved, expected recovery and any associated costs.

Skin Cancer Surgery

If a suspicious lesion or skin cancer is identified, your doctor will discuss the most appropriate next step. Depending on the type, size and location of the lesion, treatment may be able to be performed at Albany Skin Clinic.

Procedures may include biopsies and surgical removal of skin cancers under local anaesthetic. Where more specialised treatment is required, your doctor may recommend referral to a plastic surgeon or a clinic specialising in Mohs micrographic surgery, a specialised technique used to remove certain skin cancers while preserving as much healthy surrounding tissue as possible.

Depending on the lesion and your individual circumstances, your GP may recommend one of a range of procedures, including:

Shave biopsy

removes a thin layer of a skin lesion for examination.

Curettage

removes certain skin lesions by carefully scraping the affected tissue.

Cryotherapy

uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and treat certain skin lesions.

Skin excision

Skin flaps and grafts

techniques that may be used to repair the area following removal of a larger or more complex lesion.
Your GP will recommend the most appropriate procedure based on the type, size and location of the lesion.

What to Expect

Before any procedure, your doctor will explain the recommended treatment and give you an opportunity to ask questions. You will also receive information about preparing for your procedure, wound care and what to expect afterwards.

Some procedures require a follow-up appointment for results, wound review or removal of sutures. Your doctor will let you know what follow-up is required.
